Mislav Baloković

Role: Communications Committee Member

Biography:

Mislav is an astrophysicist originally from Croatia. As a YCAA Prize Postdoctoral Fellow, he works with Prof. Megan Urry on better understanding the structures of hot and cold gas and dust that form around actively growing supermassive black holes residing at the centers of galaxies. His research interests include both observations and theoretical modeling aimed at characterization of geometry and physical conditions in supermassive black hole environments. He received his Ph.D. in astrophysics from the California Institute of Technology.

He has been an amateur astronomer since high school, and enjoys spending time sharing the excitement of astronomy with the general public through public telescope viewing events, lectures, and in recent times, graphical and other published media. As a member of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration, he coordinated media outreach efforts of the collaboration on the global scale, including the announcement of the first image of a black hole in 2019.
