The Office of Career Strategy welcomes SciPhD for a 1/2 day workshop for STEM students and postdocs who want to transition from academia to non-academic careers on Friday, April 8 from 9am to 1pm. In this half-day workshop, the myths and realities of working in industry are introduced and discussed. Focus is on the critical skills valued by industry, how industry perceives academic scientists, and how scientists can relate their own experiences and the scientific method to the core competencies valued in industry.

  • Learn to communicate your experiences in ways that resonate with hiring managers.
  • Learn to analyze a job ad and identify the technical, business and social skills required for the job and use that information to build a targeted resume that separates you from your competition.
  • Experience how to expand your network, develop an elevator pitch to initiate conversations, and use those communications skills to gain advocates who will get your resume to the hiring manager.
  • Finally. learn how to use your new knowledge to manage the behavioral-based interview process and get the job.
