Abigail K. Corona

Role: Professional Development Committee Member

Biography:

Abigail K. Corona is a postdoctoral associate in the laboratory of Dr. Craig Roy, at the Yale School of Medicine’s department of Microbial Pathogenesis. Her research is currently focused on the host cell biology of Coxiella burnetii infection, specifically how C. burnetii establishes and maintains an intracellular niche during infection. She currently co-chairs the departmental climate and diversity committee where she is working to continually improve accessibility, career preparation, and the atmosphere within the department.

Abigail completed her BS in Biochemistry at Carroll University and her PhD in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Maryland-Baltimore. During her thesis work, she focused on host cell biology of Enterovirus D68 infection in the laboratory of Dr. William Jackson. Enterovirus D68 is an RNA virus that during infection, may cause acute flaccid myelitis in children, primarily under 5 years old. There, she studied how autophagy in the host cell is essential for virus growth and maturation, in order to better understand the replication scheme for the virus. When not in the lab, she gets excited about elaborate baking, crafting and taking walks with her partner and dog.
