First Proposal Page/Abstract and Specific Aims Page

For private funding agencies, key personnel and their expertise are also included and the page has to be written at an educated lay audience level. This page can make or break your proposal. For the class, please draft the following:
Abstract ----1 paragraph consisting of
• Context/background/rationale (few sentences)
• Relevant preliminary findings (few sentences)
• Goal/Overall Objective --- 1 sentence – in bold
• General strategy/approach (1-2 sentences)
Specific Aims --- list 2-3 aims written as a numbered list. The aims should have a clear title and include a short paragraph
Example:
Aim 1 Title 1 + short description consisting of a rationale and/or preliminary results (1-2 sentences), experimental approach (1-3 sentences), and expected outcomes for the aim (1 sentence).
Aim 2 Title 2 + short description consisting of a rationale and/or preliminary results (1-2 sentences), experimental approach (1-3 sentences), and expected outcomes for the aim (1 sentence).
Key personnel --- list the PI, coPI(s), and other key personnel along with their area of expertise and contribution to the proposed project.
Impact and Significance --- 1 short paragraph/ 2-4 sentences
• Summarize overall expected outcome(s) (1-2 sentences)
• State impact/significance (about 2 sentences) within your field, outside your field, to humanity
In addition, please check that
o your specific aims are not entirely depended on each other (i.e. make sure that aim 2 or 3 can still succeed even if aim 1 does not)
o your objective is immediately visible and obvious to the reviewer (for example through bold face)
o your first sentence is brief and starts with the most important key term of your proposal
o your significance portion is broad enough to be of interest to a diverse audience
